The 2009 H1N1 influenza (sometimes called Swine Flu) is caused by a new strain of influenza virus. Because it is a new virus, most people have no immunity and it has spread very rapidly. The 2009 H1N1influenza is spread in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people with flu. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something - such as a surface or object - with flu viruses on it and then touching their eyes, nose or mouth.
The Broward County Health Department is working hard to provide the H1N1 Swine Flu vaccine, first to priority groups and then to all Broward County residents and visitors who choose to be vaccinated. In order to do this, we are working with many partners including:

All people to choose to be vaccinated will have the opportunity to be vaccinated. Initial doses of the vaccine are being directed to priority groups.
At this time, H1N1 vaccinations are being offered to students in public schools in Broward County. The Broward County Health Department has also offered the vaccine to private and charter schools. Parents with children at private and charter schools must contact their school and inquire whether or not their school will be participating. If your child attends a school that is not participating, please contact your healthcare provider.

The H1N1 High Risk Clinic will operate as follows:
Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00AM to 4:00PM Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM (Extended Hours)
At this time no appointments will be required; you may walk in and be served on a first come, first served basis.The clinic will serve high risk individuals who cannot access the vaccine through their healthcare provider yet or do not have a provider, that are part of the CDC’s vaccine priority groups (see below). Once the priority groups are served, and as more vaccine arrives, the vaccine will be more widely available through providers, retail pharmacies and eventually public Points of Dispensing (PODs) targeted to serve those who have no provider or insurance.
