Syphilis is Back!
Health officials at the Broward County Health Department are concerned about
the number of new cases of SYPHILIS that have been diagnosed in Broward. Since
January 01, 2001,
11 new cases of syphilis have been diagnosed. Eleven cases of
a disease we were almost rid of completely!
Results of investigation into the cases suggest increases in
risky behavior among men
who have sex with men (MSM). A majority of the cases were MSM claiming multiple
sex partners.
Risky behavior not only increases risk of syphilis, but HIV as well.
You may also put yourself at risk for resistant strains of the HIV virus.
The community is being asked to assist us in battling this sexually
transmitted disease that is curable, but only in the early stages of the
disease. We are asking everybody, and especially MSM to take responsibility for
their health and to practice safer sex:
· Use latex condoms every time you have sex
- each and every time - regardless of what others may tell you... bare-backing
can be deadly
· Don’t share toys, needles or other objects
that can become infected by blood or body fluids
· Get tested - know your status - talk to
your sex partners about safer sex - remember, you can’t tell if someone is
infected by looking at them
· If you think you’re infected - see your health care
provider
· Get the facts about sexually transmitted
diseases including HIV/AIDS

You take the time to make sure that you look
terrific before you go out...
How about taking some time to take care of your
health? |
