Teen dating violence is a preventable public health problem.
• One in 10 high school students has experienced physical violence from a dating partner in the past year.
• One in 4 adolescents reports verbal, emotional, physical or sexual dating violence each year.
• Exposure to dating violence can affect mental and physical health.
The Broward County Health Department, in partnership with Broward County Public Schools, represents one of four urban communities nationwide selected to take part in Dating Matters™. The initiative, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will examine a comprehensive approach to teen dating violence over a five year period.
The CDC developed Dating Matters™: Strategies to Promote Healthy Teen Relationships,

a comprehensive teen dating violence prevention initiative based on the current evidence about what works in prevention. Dating Matters™ focuses on 11 to 14 year olds in targeted, urban communities and includes:
• Evidence-based student and parent programs
• Educator training
• Local policy development and enhancement
• Communication strategies
