The Florida Department of Health regulates tanning devices
that emit electromagnetic radiation. This legislation was approved in
January 1993, and codified as 381.89(6) FS and 10D-112 FAC, later 64E-17FAC.
There are risks associated with over exposure to
ultraviolet light from tanning beds and booths, as there are with over exposure
to sunlight. Tanning facility staff should advise clients about the
maximum exposure time for the device they are using. These employees must
be properly trained and aware of emergency shutoff controls, protective eyewear
usage and the cleaning and maintaining of tanning device surfaces. There
are more than 1700 tanning facilities, with over 7500 tanning devices that are
licensed in Florida by the local county health departments. Inspections
are conducted twice a year to verify their safe and sanitary operations.
Federal Requirements for ultra violet (UV) light equipment
are found in title 21CFR (Code of federal regulations) Section 1040.20.
